Something fun happened the other evening. I was having a kinda off day - not a bad one, just dealing with grumpies and problems at work and lots on my mind. Couldn't wait for the work day to be over so that I could head home. When a glance out the window revealed a rainbow - very beautiful! Not only was there a rainbow but a perfect and crisp one that lasted for 1/2 and hour. I was immediately cheered up! It started to fade just as I headed home but as I walked from my parking spot to the door...there it was again! It had followed me home! Called Mom so she could see it too.
What a wonderful way to end a difficult day.

The tales of a single, middle aged woman and two kitty’s in the big city - trying to recover from illness, prep for tomorrow, help my Mom and hold down a modest job. It doesn’t sound like much when you say it all together like that. LOL How am I going to do all that? One step at a time. Life is a journey not a destination. Keep putting one foot in front of the other. Take each moment as it comes, because it is the one that matters now. Never Give Up - EVER!

Shampoo Trials
I had ment to write more about food but I've been working on other things. So what I will do is post the notes from my home made shampoo trials. I have sensitive skin and often have problems with ichy scalp and even some flaking and little sores like pimples - nothing serious just annoying. My base is baking soda, some people use just baking soda and like it although there is a adjustment period when your hair can be worse before it gets better. I also have been rinsing with apple cider vinegar diluted with water, and no, once your hair is dry the smell is gone and you just smell clean. Keep in mind that this is a work in progress and I will post more results later - if you want to try for yourself I suggest you do some research to find what ingrediants might work better for your type of hair and skin. Here are the notes:
SHAMPOO TRIALS
January - This is the first home shampoo that I have tried, lets see how it goes…
1) Baking soda
Castile soap
Herb tea / lavender, rosemary, nettle, sage, ?
- Rinse w/ diluted apple cider vinegar
Results: Ok, the vinegar made my hair feel like silk while it was wet but my hair dried a bit stiff, not bad but I didn’t really like it, although my scalp is better and it feels clean.
Suggestions: Don’t forget the chamomile in the tea, maybe some tea tree oil too. A bit of olive oil or such might help keep it from feeling quite as dry.
Maybe less vinegar and a little essential oil for scent
February
1) Baking soda
Castile soap
Herb tea/ lavender, nettle, sage, chamomile (forgot the rosemary)
- Rinse with diluted apple cider vinegar
Results: So far so good - I had used a “natural” store bought shampoo in between. I like the feel of what I make myself tho - still having some problems with flaking - darn it! I’m going to try just the home made shampoo for a week or two and see what happens. Maybe I should use it a little more often too.
2) This time I am trying it without any soap - it doesn’t really make many suds and I feel clean anyway. Still having problems with flaking after a couple of days, but I may just need to wash more often. I did some research online and a couple of people said they got a bit flaky at first but that it clears up after a month or two. They also say that you have to wash your hair a little more often at first. I would like to get it down to 2 or 3 times a week. This time I’m using this recipe:
Baking soda
Tee tree oil
Herb tea: Sage, rosemary, chamomile, nettle, lavender
- wondering if I should add some olive oil….
And rinse with diluted apple vinegar
I’ve read that a bit of coconut oil put on as it dries is a very good conditioner. Don’t think I will try that today.
Results: I did add a little bit of olive oil to the mix. While I’m sure it is good for my hair, it left it a bit … not exactly greasy but it needs to be washed again so tomorrow I will wash again (usually it is at least 3 days for me) I’ll use the same recipe with out the oil and see how that turns out.
Try, try again.

Budgets, Plans, Lists!
Ooff am I tired! Got some yard work done for Mom - we are both not used to that and are beat and will be sore tomorrow. Trimmed trees and they look better for it so it was worth it.
Also been doing a lot of planning and figuring and Mom has been a big help. Looked at plans for solar dryers and found one I can make from cardboard boxes - this would be a wonderful way to try this out without a lot of expense so I like it. Need to find some way to do the trays but I can do it with boxes from work and some small modifications. Add that to the projects list!
Started a list of budget meals and came up with a lot of ideas, enough to maybe do two or three a week. Mom is great with food ideas! This could really help in the budget department and make meal time more interesting. This is always a bit of a challenge for me because I have multiple food allergies and sensitivies. Gluten, Dairy, Sugar and Citrus are the main ones. Funny thing is that I can eat all the lemons I want without problems, a little orange once in awhile is okay but greatfruit and tangerines give me major migraines. Bah! Some sugar is okay but I do better if I avoid. Similiar with goat milk, okay once in awhile but try not to use too often. If it works out I will post the list.
I've been making a lot of lists, plans and then more lists - I've always done lists but not always plans to go with them. It really helps to focus my thoughts and I think it will be a big help keeping me on track this year. Sure hope so... there is a lot to get done!!

Frugal Planning
Talked with Mom - wanted to see if she was okay with making our own laundry soap. Got a couple of recipies off the net to try. We both think that it would be great if we can save money making our own, provided it really does the job. Now to find a bar of soap we both like...
Although I don't live with Mom, I do my laundry at her house - she says it is a bribe so that will come hang out with her and help get a few things done around the house. Well...it works, even though I would do that for her anyway. We have a good time and both get things done that need doing. That is usually our errand (shopping) day too.
The other was the solar food dryer I would like to make - no room for that sort of thing at my place. She was just fine with it but reminded me it would have to be high enough off the ground that the medium large dogs couldn't make thier own....shall we say contributions. LOL Then we discussed if we would move it or just make a cover for the rare times it rains here. Hmmm..... I'm still looking at plans, but adding wheels would add cost, so a tarp seems the most frugal plan. This is going to be a fun year! We are both looking for ways to save!

First Attempt
I was encouraged to start this blog by my family. I've never blogged before although I often enjoy other blogs. They made some good points and here I am making my first attempt to blog. Wow!
Anyway like a lot of people out there I've got issues but I try to deal with them in a common sense way and that's what this is going to be about. My attempt to live a normal life, in spite of it all. My issues tend to be about my limited health, but I'm also trying to prepare a bit for any future difficulties also. Mostly the health issue's are about having enough energy so that I can work and take care of myself, and I still have a bit left for the kitties and Mom. My prep's are mostly focused on food at the moment although I'm getting emergency kits in shape too.
Anyway...here goes!
